5 Steps to choosing the right workshop for you!
Let’s be honest, there are A LOT of workshops to choose from. Amiright?!
No one wants to be the girl in the corner having major buyers remorse. Especially when workshops these days have a typical starting price around $2,000. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have $2,000 just laying around for me to waste!
As a frequent workshop speaker, I've evaluated some helpful tips to choosing the right workshop for you.
MY TOP 5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING A WORKSHOP
Despite what they say, size matters! The size of a workshop really affects the overall experience. A small group size typically lends itself to more one-on-one time with speakers, time for small group discussions with other attendees, and plenty of time for processing the information and applying to your business right away. However, this small group size comes at a cost! You can expect a small workshop to have a much higher price tag, economies of scale doesn't work in your favor here.
While a small workshop may provide a more intimidate setting, a large workshop cuts out the processing time, small group chats and “hangout” time allowing for more jam packed teaching time. Typically the pace is going to be much faster, giving you a vast majority of information to take and process later. A larger group typically means lower price-point.
2. The Experience.
In addition to the group size, think about the overall experience YOU are looking for. Is community important to you? Do you want to be pampered and known by name? Is it all in the details for you - beautifully designed dinners and fireside chats? Than a smaller, more intimate workshop will be a better fit. Or do you have enough friends and just looking to be overloaded with rock solid information? If you are craving content over experience a large workshop or even an online program may be the best fit for you!
Are you looking for industry specific information? Broad business information? Do you want to build your skills as an artist? Or are you looking to further your knowledge of pricing?
This may seem like a no brainer, but I hear a lot of attendees left wanting when it comes to content. Make sure to do your homework and ask yourself “what do I need?” If you are thirsty for someone to give you a step-by-step formula for pricing, taking the time out to learn floral design or watercolor calligraphy is going to feel unnecessary. Whereas, if you are looking to become a better artist or try out new mediums, you may be overwhelmed with a heavy-content driven approach.
Make sure to review the workshop website and read through the content and speakers carefully. And remember.. just because a workshop has big name speakers or "sells out" every time.. doesn't mean its the right fit for you!
I think it is very important to put some type of business development budget in place each and every year for your business. Whether that be a one-on-one mentor, a workshop or some online training – we all have room to learn. Start doing your research now into what type of workshop you’d like to attend and price them out. There are SO many wonderful options depending on your specific desires – but don't get caught buying on the fly or you may regret it!
Also, Make sure you know what is included in the registration fee! Some fees only include the training + materials. You are responsible for travel, accommodations + food. Other fees are more inclusive and include accommodations + food. Pay attention to what is included and look around. If your heart is set on ONE, make sure to budget for it!
The most important consideration! What do you want to get out of this workshop? Workshops, programs + retreats aren’t small investments, so know going in what you want to get out of it! I recommend having a list of TOP 3 “outcomes” you want to take away from the experience. Some common examples would be : a community of like-minded people, a new pricing structure, more confidence with floral installations, re-energized + inspired. BE SPECIFIC! If you don’t know what you want, it will be extremely hard to pick the right one for you!
